The Canon EOS R8 Mark II is a lightweight full-frame hybrid camera designed for travel, content creation, and everyday shooting. Its 24.2MP CMOS sensor captures high-resolution still images and 6K-oversampled UHD 4K video, while 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization, improved burst shooting, pre-capture, and intelligent autofocus provide added flexibility for both photo and video.
High-Speed Electronic Shutter
The R8 Mark II is designed to help capture fast-moving subjects with high-speed continuous shooting and pre-capture. Pre-capture begins recording images to the buffer when the shutter button is half-pressed, allowing you to capture up to 20 frames within a half second before fully pressing the shutter.
Continuous shooting is available at up to 40 fps, with an improved buffer compared to the original R8. The camera can capture up to 73 RAW images continuously, a 30% increase, or up to 190 JPEG images, representing a 58% increase.
Intelligent Autofocus
The Register People Priority autofocus function lets you register specific people so the camera can prioritize them when multiple faces are present. This can be useful for weddings, group portraits, lifestyle photography, events, and other situations where maintaining focus on a particular person is important.
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system provides 100% frame coverage for edge-to-edge subject tracking. Intelligent subject detection can recognize people, animals, and vehicles for both still images and video, with focus detection available for features such as faces, eyes, and driver helmets.
With a low-luminance focusing limit of -7.5 EV, the autofocus system can continue to operate accurately in challenging low-light environments such as concerts, clubs, and nighttime outdoor scenes.
7.5 Stops of IBIS
The R8 Mark II features 5-axis in-body image stabilization designed to reduce the effects of camera shake during handheld shooting. The stabilization system provides up to 7.5 stops of correction at the center and 7 stops at the edges for still images, helping produce sharper photos at slower shutter speeds and smoother handheld video.
Compact Video Powerhouse
The R8 Mark II records 6K-oversampled UHD 4K video at up to 60p with 10-bit color, providing detailed footage for vlogs, travel videos, and content creation. Full HD recording is also available at up to 180p for slow-motion playback and creative effects.
For advanced video workflows, Canon Log 3 provides up to 14 stops of dynamic range for greater flexibility during color grading. The camera also includes HDR video options, Canon 709, and BT.709 Standard for workflows requiring simpler color management.
A red tally lamp on the subject-facing side of the camera provides a clear visual indication when movie recording is active.
Creative Modes
The R8 Mark II includes built-in creative modes designed to simplify image creation without requiring extensive post-processing. The SCN setting provides 14 automated presets covering different shooting situations, including studio portraits and handheld nighttime city scenes.
Positive and negative filmtone modes digitally reproduce the texture and toning of classic positive slide film and negative film for a retro, analog-inspired appearance. Advanced A+ mode can recognize the scene and use intelligent bracketing and image processing to produce an optimized final image.
