The NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S from Nikon is a versatile wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom designed for a broad range of applications, from landscapes and travel to portraits and everyday photography. Its constant f/4 maximum aperture provides consistent exposure throughout the zoom range, while the advanced optical design delivers high sharpness and clarity in a relatively compact and lightweight package.
Advanced Optical Design
The lens combines three ED elements, one aspherical ED element, and three aspherical elements to effectively reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range. This optical configuration helps maintain sharp, detailed images with consistent clarity.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats help reduce ghosting, reflections, and flare for improved contrast and clarity when shooting in strong lighting or backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light entering from diagonal angles, while the ARNEO Coat helps suppress light entering vertically.
Fast and Quiet Autofocus
A multi-focus system uses two synchronized AF drive units to provide fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. Stepping motors deliver smooth and quiet autofocus performance, making the lens well suited for both still photography and video recording.
Full-time manual focus override provides additional control when needed, while the internal focusing design moves only internal lens groups to maintain the overall length of the lens during focusing and support faster operation. A dedicated manual focus ring at the rear of the lens provides tactile control over focus adjustments.
With a minimum focusing distance of 1.1′ and maximum magnification of 0.39x, the lens can also focus closely on subjects for detailed close-up compositions.
Practical Handling and Design
A programmable Control Ring provides direct access to settings such as aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation, while the assignable L.Fn button can be customized for quick access to frequently used camera functions and exposure settings.
The lens features a dust- and moisture-resistant barrel to help provide reliable operation in challenging conditions. A fluorine coating on the front element also helps protect against water, oil, and other contaminants.
