Design and Performance
Built with 17 elements in 11 groups, the Sigma 17-50mm f/1.8 DC DN Art lens incorporates four aspherical and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements to reduce flare, ghosting, and various optical aberrations. The result is sharp, high-contrast imagery across the zoom range, rivaling the performance of Sigma’s flagship Art lenses, including the 18-35mm f/1.8. An 11-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to smooth, pleasing bokeh at wide apertures. The lens also maintains a close 11″ minimum focusing distance throughout the zoom range, with a maximum magnification of 1:4.8 at the telephoto end, adding flexibility for close-up work and tighter compositions.
Video Production
Engineered for video workflows, the lens combines a fast f/1.8 aperture with a practical wide-to-normal zoom range, making it well-suited for solo operators and handheld or gimbal-mounted shooting. Its internal zoom mechanism keeps the lens length consistent during use, aiding balance and stability on rigs. Focus breathing is effectively minimized for smoother focus transitions, and the high-speed linear actuator delivers fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance. Manual focus is enhanced with responsive, click-and-lock controls for greater precision during critical focus pulls.
