A New Addition to Sony’s Cinema Line
Positioned between the compact FX3 and the production-focused FX6, the FX5 introduces an entirely new option within Sony’s Cinema Line. While sharing the portable form factor of the FX3, it adopts many of the professional tools, menu system, and workflow features found in Sony’s higher-end cinema cameras.
Unlike the FX3, which blends mirrorless photography and cinema functionality, the FX5 is dedicated almost exclusively to filmmaking. It replaces still-photo capabilities with professional video features such as internal Open Gate recording, X-OCN workflows, expanded monitoring tools, and a redesigned cinema-focused interface. At the same time, it remains smaller and more agile than the FX6, making it ideal for handheld operation, gimbal work, travel productions, and solo filmmaking.
16.6MP Full-Frame Stacked Sensor & BIONZ XR2 Processor
At the heart of the FX5 is Sony’s newly developed 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor, designed to maximize image quality while dramatically increasing readout speed. Combined with the powerful BIONZ XR2 processor and integrated AI processing unit, the camera delivers reduced rolling shutter, excellent low-light performance, natural color reproduction, and cinematic tonal transitions.

Designed for demanding post-production workflows, the FX5 supports internal recording up to 5K Open Gate (3:2) at 60 fps along with Sony’s powerful X-OCN recording formats.
Open Gate recording captures the entire sensor area, providing additional flexibility for reframing footage, creating multiple aspect ratios, stabilizing in post, or producing visual effects without sacrificing resolution. Internal X-OCN recording preserves exceptional tonal information while generating significantly more manageable file sizes than traditional RAW workflows.

Improved low-light autofocus further enhances confidence when filming in challenging lighting conditions, while advanced subject recognition helps maintain sharp focus during handheld, gimbal, and documentary productions.
